Take a look at this mosaic of photos. At first glance, it looks like a set of random pictures. Now, step back and take another look. What do you see?
Creating a photomosaic
The best way to create a photomosaic is by using a photomosaic software. These softwares use a mathematical algorithm to form a large scale mosaic from a set of small pictures (tiles).
Our software, Mosaic123, allows to create a mosaic in 3 simple steps :
1. Choose the poster size.
2. Choose the target image – i.e., the large image.
3. choose the collection of pictures (tiles) which will assemble the target image and the software wiil do the rest.
Guidelines for creating a professional mosaic
A well constructed photomosaic shuld be smooth and the tiles should be as clear as possible, without color distortions.
The photomosaic software outcome mainly depends on the user input.
There are two basic rules for creating a high quality photomosaic:
Rule #1 – In order to have a smooth photomosaic, the number of tiles added by the user should be as high as possible. A set of 200 pictures is the minimum. As the amount of tiles increases, the poster will become smoother.
Rule #2 – The target image’s main objects should be large and clear. Specifically, if the target image contains people, its highly recommended to focus only on faces. Small faces usually come out blurry. In Mosaic123, you can easily zoom in and pan the picture to have the faces located as recommended:
